The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law requests that governors from each state provide a way for out-of-state first responders to vote while still continuing to aid in the recovery effort.
Many of the 8,000 first responders sent to New York and New Jersey to aid in the recovery from Superstorm Sandy could be sent home to vote and would not return to the devastated area to provide relief. Because of the urgency of the situation on the East Coast, many were not able to request absentee ballots through the normal procedures.
We urge governors to permit first responders to vote as overseas voters, loosen rules as Federal Write-In Ballots, or allow access to emergency absentee ballots. A decision must be made by the end of volunteer shifts later today; otherwise, many of these volunteers will leave and not return to the region.
