In an editorial last Friday, the New York Times once again expressed their support for modernizing our voter registration system. "Reviving the Motor Voter Law" focuses on the ineffectiveness of the National Voter Registration Act, and a letter sent by Senator Schumer to the Attorney General asking him to sue noncompliant states. However, the Times goes on to describe the "larger answer" to the registration problems we face:
The larger answer to low registration rates is to enact laws requiring universal voter registration, which would put the burden on states to find people - through government lists, including tax records - and register them. But until that happens, the Justice Department should make sure that states follow the motor voter law's more modest mandates.
