"Virginia's paper-form based voter registration system is the root of many absentee voting problems," writes Election Protection leader Michael Romano in his letter to the Washington Examiner. Last month Virginia House Speaker William Howell called for reforming the way military absentee ballots are processed in order to avoid the disenfranchisement of our troops. However, as Mr. Romano points out, this would be only one of the essential steps necessary to protect the voice of the military.
Our nation's antiquated paper- based registration system is cumbersome and inefficient. Simple mistakes lead to voters being left off the rolls and unable to receive an absentee ballot. Additionally, the time spent administering the mountains of paper registration form keeps election officials from fulfilling other critical duties, such as mailing absentee ballots to our troops on time, recruiting and training poll workers, and preparing for Election Day.
Modernizing Virginia's voter registration process is crucial to ensuring our brave men and women fighting overseas are able to fully participate in the democracy that they defend.
