New Jersey Now Offers Permanent Absentee Request

New Jersey governor Jon S. Corzine has signed into law a new bill allowing residents to sign up for a permanent absentee registration.

Voters will be given the opportunity to receive mail-in-ballots for one calendar year or for all future elections, eliminating the need to continue requesting an absentee ballot.  This permanent absentee registration option will greatly cut down the burden on election officials to process all the absentee ballots requests for every election creating a more efficient system.  As an added protection, any voter who applies for but fails to receive a ballot by mail or fails to return a completed ballot may still cast a provisional ballot on Election Day.

The new system will allow voters to be notified when their application has been either accepted or rejected, and in the case of rejection, a reason for the application dismissal.  In the past years many eligible voters have been unable to cast their ballot because they were unaware a problem had occurred until it was too late.  This notification requirement will ensure that would-be voters are not left out in the cold.
